A suitcase which sparked a bomb scare in Ipswich has been found to contain nothing but personal items.

A section of the the city’s CBD was evacuated on Monday morning after a blue suitcase was found abandoned at a bus stop on Bell Street.

Surrounding streets near the Ipswich City Mall, including Limestone, Ellenborough and East streets, were cordoned off and several buildings were evacuated.

Police also delcared an “emergent situation” under the Public Safety Preservation Act about 7.20am.

But, upon inspection, the suitcase was found to contain only “personal items”, a police spokesman said.

The streets were reopened and workers allowed to return to their offices about 9.15am.

It is the third bomb scare of its kind to occur in as many weeks.

The bomb squad was called to George Street in Brisbane’s CBD after a suspicious suitcase was found outside the Supreme Court on September 12.

Police were called to George Street again on September 24 after another suitcase was left at the entrance of the National Australia Bank.
